Who doesn’t love a night out at the movies? One of my biggest disappointments about moving abroad has to be being able to see international films in a language that I’m fluent in. Although I’m learning Dutch, there’s something so relaxing about seeing a film in English. These are the best movie theatres in the Hague with movies in English with a few notes about them!
Note: There aren’t many cinemas in the Hague, especially compared to Amsterdam. Similarly, film times are generally released on Monday for the week, so it’s often not possible to buy tickets far in advance for films!
By default, most movies shown in the Netherlands that are originally in another language (including English) are not dubbed, unless they’re children’s films. You’ll typically see Dutch subtitles at the bottom of the screen, unless the movie is in Dutch. The only issue that you might encounter is that if another language is spoken in passing during a film, the subtitles are in only Dutch. (Watching Wonderwoman in the Netherlands was hilarious due to the stilted and ridiculous Dutch dialogue within the film. )
filmhuis den haag
I love Filmhuis Den Haag! This movie theatre shows independent films, documentaries, and international films with English subtitles. (If you have the Cinevillepas unlimited pass, you can use it here, which is worthwhile if you go to the movies often.) There are often premieres at this theater and its agenda is always full of thought-provoking films. It’s located close to Centre, close to Den Haag Centraal. There’s a cozy cafe for a post-movie chat about the film!
pathe cinemas in the hague
Can you not mention Pathe? I put a star as there are numerous Pathe cinemas and not of all their movies are in English or subtitled in English. (This is particularly true for children’s films and international films.) For blockbusters, Pathe is often where I go for 3D movies and the newest movies coming out of Hollywood.
You can also get an unlimited pass for Pathe, but it depends how much you love what is coming out of Hollywood. One deal that is often worthwhile for Pathe goers is checking on their websites for deals with nearby restaurants and bars for dinner before/after a movie. If you’re looking for a date night in the Hague, this is a good way to save if you’re planning to eat beforehand!
This is one of the largest cinemas in the Hague. Tickets can sell out for movies close to the premiere date, so buy ahead if you want to see something on opening night. Drinks and snacks are pretty reasonable within the cinema.
Next to the Binnenhof, you’ll find the beautiful and slightly smaller Pathe Buitenhof. They still offer the standard fare although there are fewer showings of movies, so check the schedule carefully beforehand!
Pathe Scheveningen is a clean and modern movie theatre close to the beach, so if you’re looking to enjoy a movie, you’ll find a lot of showtimes in this giant complex!
Theatre Dakota is an independent theatre and cinema out towards Loosduinen. They often show high-quality films from Hollywood as well as independent films. There are fewer showtimes, but if you love supporting a smaller theatre and live further out of the city center, it might be worth checking their times/dates.
MOVIES THAT MATTER FESTIVAL*
This annual movie festival in the Hague is a great way to see great documentaries from all around the world. Each March, check the schedule for thought-provoking films!
