One of the most terrifying things about moving abroad is finding a hairdresser. Although the Dutch certainly have a great control of English, the last thing I want is a “kort pittig” hairstyle. For years, I’ve cut my own hair as I’ve been nervous about trusting a hairdresser. I decided to get balayage this year and I’ve been in love with the results. These are the best English-speaking hairdressers in the Hague recommended by friends and fellow expats!
greenhouse salon (formerly KAPNÂH)
When I decided that I wanted balayage (subtle highlights that are hand-painted), I saw it offered at a number of Dutch salons, but Greenhouse Salon came highly recommended by fellow expats. Joelle is so sweet and I felt immediately in good hands when I came to her for an appointment. I loved that I was the only one there and it was clear that she had a lot of experience doing color, more so than the other salons that I had considered. If you’re looking for something beautiful and subtle, come here as Joelle will listen to you and your needs.
studio in-forme
Michele is a pro with curly hair and he’s known as one of the best English-speaking hairdressers in the Hague who will treat you professionally. Just be warned: Don’t disturb him while he’s working.
Insieme
For a hair salon that will listen to you (rather than hacking away) with a coffee while you relax, head to Insieme. My friend swears by this Haagse hairsalon for keeping her color fresh and not going too heavy with hair-cuts for thin hair.
toni & Guy
Many expats swear by Toni & Guy for a great cut and color. Whether you’re looking for a simple cut to refresh your look or a bit of color to improve your style, Toni & Guy ranks among the most popular high-end salons in the Hague!
other hairdresser recommendations that i haven’t yet tested out
- Mandy at Haagse Druten
- Gaga’s Style
- Vicky Kuyt-Cassar at Hair Topic
- Huis van Groen
where i won’t go back to
One other note: I recently went to Kinki Kappers (Korte Poten), which came highly recommended for colouring by other expats in the Hague. I am generally pleased with the balayage effect, however the experience otherwise was really unpleasant. I was quoted a price that was 40% lower than what I was told that it would cost when I arrived. I was able to discuss it as it was apparently “misquoted.” I ended up paying 15% more than I intended to pay.
for men: Benoah Barbers
For men looking for the best barbershop experience in the Hague, head to Benoah Barbers to get pampered while getting a great shave (or haircut). If you enjoy having a well-kept beard, come here to experience a master of his craft!

Nice resources! It is hard to find a good hairdresser. After trying a few, I’d recommend adding Central Hair Salon in the Hague. Eva is the owner… speaks English, offers great advice, great cuts, color and the prices are good!

I don’t even live in the Hague but this post is so so so so important. As an expat in Germany, finding a hairstylist that can understand me (and not give me a default Jennifer Aniston haircut!) was probably my hardest adjustment. What a great idea to make a list!
