As an American living in the Netherlands, it’s very strange seeing my home culture get Dutchified, but you won’t hear any complaints from me about the popularity of burgers in the Hague (and the Netherlands in general). I’ve been slowly trying out as many burger places in the Hague as possible looking for that authentic taste of home. These are the best burger places in the Hague according to this very picky American.
Burgers ‘n Freakin’ Fries
My favorite burger place in the Hague has to be Burgers ‘n Freaking’ Fries. This cozy burger sits within the MingleMush food hall next to Den Haag Centraal is run by two friends who visited New York and fell in love with American-style burgers.
Their burgers are juicy with the perfect level of greasiness that give it the authentic taste of home and I love their twister fries with homemade sauce. I brought my mother-in-law here and it reminded her of a perfect burger cooked at home. Can you give any higher praise?
ich bin ein hamburger
For untraditional burgers in a beautiful old Hague building, come to Ich Bin Ein Hamburger. This cozy Dutch restaurant with a stunning interior specializes in artisanal burgers with a twist. They try to make their ingredients surprising, so although the prices are a bit higher than normal, this is where to come for a gourmet hamburger on a date. Do you dare to order the duck burger with foie gras? 😉
I really like Firma Pickles and Burgers. This Dutch burger chain with delicious pickles (not surprisingly) is not stingy with the toppings and food. They have two locations in the Hague: Den Haag Centraal and De Pier. Their burgers are large with lots of toppings. I really love their Jalapeno Burger, which is truly spicy.
Friends of mine who aren’t spicy fans also like their normal burgers. Prices are a bit higher as you would expect for the location, but you cannot beat the convenience. It’s so much better going here than going to Smullerz or Burger King… You can sit down if you wish! There’s wi-fi and it’s surprisingly quiet at the DH Centraal location.
I had to mention Five Guys! This American burger restaurant in the Hague is the real thing and actually an affordable option for a burger in the Center. For the same price as McDonald’s, you can get a delicious burger made-to-order with locally sourced ingredients. I love that you can add as many toppings as you want for free and that condiments are free. Their Cajun fries are also quite delicious with the meal. I usually order the Little Burger as it’s still well-sized!
Lastly, I had to mention Burger Bar in the Hague Center. This Burger restaurant near the Binnenhof serves standard yet delicious burgers with high-quality meat. If you’re looking for a delicious burger made with Angus or Irish beef, come to Burger Bar. I find their customizations a bit underwhelming compared to other places, but I enjoy their monthly specials that occasionally feature crazier burgers. (Please bring back the Kimchi burger!) Still, a solid burger!
