The Hague is the only Dutch city that has both the sea and the city together in one. It’s a wonderful thing because on a nice day, you can bike out to the beach, but you might be wondering which beach is the best to visit and how to get away from the crowds. This article will discuss beaches in the Hague region.

Scheveningen

Beautiful sunset at Scheveningen, the most popular beach in the Hague.

I could not write an article about beaches in the Hague without discussing Scheveningen. I know, but it does have a lot to offer in terms of food, beach huts where you can dance the night away, many attractions, and a nice boardwalk. Still, it’s madness on a warm day in the summer. I still like to camp out some of the beach huts on a nice day in summer or sit on the beach with friends enjoying the sunset.

strandslag 10/11 (towards duindorp)

This beach hidden behind Westduinpark is often one of the quieter beaches in the Hague as people don’t often realize how lovely this is. Another plus of this beach is that the studio of famed Hague artist Theo Janssen is nearby and you often see him on the beach testing out his creations in the summer. It’s a favorite of a few people that I’ve met that still love to walk on the beach, but prefer to have it to themselves.

Along the beach, there are a few other attractions including the quirky Jutterskeet Ome Jan where you can view all the items collected from the beach by one collector and the Atlantic Wall Museum (Stichting Atlantikwall Museum), which is open generally on Sundays in summer. A large bunker is close to this beach if you’re curious about more than just history.

kijkduin beach

Cute beach hut on KIJKDUIN beach in the Hague, one of the quieter beaches to visit in the Hague!

Kijkduin Beach is the other favorite of locals in the Hague and my favorite as well! A while ago, I had stayed overnight at the HaagseStrandhuisjes, picturesque beach cottages directly in the sand where you can wake up to the sound of the ocean.

Kijkduin feels untouched compared to Scheveningen and I loved the feeling of having the sunset as well as the sunrise to myself. You can also do some watersports out here, such as kitesurfing. This beach feels off the beaten path–and this is why I prefer to come here given the choice.

do you have any other favorite beaches in the hague?
